Mengambil setting perang kemerdekaan Aljazair pada tahun 1959, film ini berkisah seorang Letnan Tentara Prancis, Terrien (Benoît Magimel), yang ditempatkan di suatu pos militer nun jauh di pedalaman Aljazair untuk menggantikan seorang yang telah 'gugur' sebelumnya. Prancis saat itu sedang memerangi fellagha (freedom fighters?) yang berjuang untuk kemerdekaan Aljazair.

Menarik disimak bagaimana Terrien yang hidup dalam idealisme naifnya ketika harus berhadapan dengan realitas perang yang sesungguhnya seperti pembantaian, penyiksaan, pengkhianatan, balas dendam, hidup dan mati, menjadi fokus dalam film ini. Harus dilihat juga peran Sersan Dougnac (Albert Dupontel), seorang veteran perang Indochina, yang sudah sangat berpengalaman di medan pertempuran Aljazair, dan digambarkan mampu bertahan di antara kegilaan perang walaupun harus bertindak kejam.

Tokh dalam proses menghabisi para fellagha dan obsesi menangkap Slimane, si pimpinan fellagha setempat yang menebar teror baik kepada penduduk maupun tentara Perancis, yang membuat dunia Terrien "terbalik". Semula apa yang dilihat Terrien "tidak berperikemanusiaan", terutama apa yang dilakukan oleh Dougnac, menjadi "the end justifies the means". Mereka tidak lebih baik dari fellagha yang diperanginya.

Memiliki spirit yang sama dengan film "Mon Colonel", bagi orang Perancis, Perang di Aljazair seperti apa yang dirasakan oleh Amerika terhadap perang Vietnam.

Saya pikir adegan action perangnya sudah cukup memuaskan. Patroli tentara, ambush, skirmish (apa bhs Indonesianya ya?), bomb napalm etc. tidak tanggung-tanggung penggambarannya. Wajib nonton bagi war movie enthusiasts!!!.
Btw, perang di kawasan pegunungan seperti ini mengingatkan pada saya film " The Lion of the Desert", tentang cerita kepahlawanan Libya, si Omar Mukhtar.

Jack Palmer, seorang detektif, disewa oleh seseorang untuk mencari seseorang (nah lho..) bernama Leoni yang tinggal di Pulau Korsika. Semua orang yang ditanya mengenai Leoni merasa tidak nyaman. Tak taunya Leoni adalah tokoh separatis Korsika yang disegani.

Di awal film sudah menjanjikan, tapi ke belakang kualitas cerita semakin melorot.

Nilai plusnya adalah tampilnya satu pemeran dalam film 007 Casino Royale, yaitu Caterina Murino. Tubuhnya seksi khas italiano hhhmmppphh....

Ada adegan yang dapat memancing tawa, namun lebih banyak guyon yang 'sangat Prancis', dalam artian 'you'll laugh if you're a french' hehehe... malah ada candaan yang spesifik Korsika.. mana kita tahu ya??
